Family Leadership & You (FLY) Project
Family Leadership for Families of a Person with a Disability
Family Leadership and You (FLY) is a new project in the ACT supported by the ACT Government. It is coordinated by Sally Richards, the mother of a young man with a disability, and a teacher, trainer, advocate and writer. FLY is designed to lead and support families to plan a positive and rich future for their sons and daughters who have a disability.
Anyone in the ACT can FLY if their philosophy matches the aims of the project. If you believe that:
• All people have strengths and much to contribute to society.
• Parents have expert knowledge when it comes to understanding their own children.
• Families serve as a unique and valuable resource for each other.
• Informed, involved and confident parents are the most effective agents for social change on behalf of their children.
• All humans have the right to be valued and feel that they belong.
• Relationships and partnerships are powerful ways of harnessing the support of others.
• Professionals and parents/families achieve the best results when they work together.
